January 3, 2019 Waldport, OR – With their 45-30 home win over the Myrtle Point Bobcats, the Irish begin conference play on a high note. Going into this game Waldport was in a win, lose, win, lose, win pattern. Their overall record was 4-8 and were slight underdogs as they faced the Bobcats. However, they had the home court advantage.
Myrtle Point entered the game with a 5-7 overall record and had lost four of their last five games including a tough 44-39 loss to Bandon.
The Bobcats took the early lead but the Irish took advantage of several turnovers and at the end of the first quarter were up 14-7.
In the second quarter Waldport doubled their first quarter output scoring another fourteen and Myrtle Point was able to score nine. At the half the Irish had 28-16 lead.
It appeared Waldport lost a little of their focus and the Bobcats made the needed adjustments in the third. At the 3:23 mark Myrtle Point had closed the Irish’s lead and were down by four 28-24. Waldport regrouped and at the end of the third quarter were up by thirteen 39-26.
Neither team was very productive in the fourth quarter. Both teams seemed tired. The Irish were only able to score six points and the Bobcats only scored four.
As conference play begins these two teams still have much to work on. Turnovers and fouls were a common theme. In the 2A-4 Sunset Conference alone it will be tough to beat a Toledo or a Coquille, if these teams play as they did tonight.
