July 25, 2016 Salem, OR – Are you ready for some basketball? Wait, basketball in the middle of summer? That’s right but, not just your basic, run of the mill 5-on-5, in a gymnasium, type of basketball. This is sponsored by the Oregon National Guard (ONG) and it’s a big one. It’s a 3-on-3 event that is played on the streets of Salem, Oregon. And, yes, the streets are closed to prevent any vehicular/basketball player injuries.
This year will be the 18 year for this event and it will be held August 6-7. Approximately 1,000 teams will compete with all manner of skills. According to the Hoopla website, “…it is believed to be the 2nd largest event of its kind in the United States.”
The number of volunteers alone is staggering. Last year I lost count at 800. Ok, I didn’t really try to count them all. But, there were volunteers everywhere I looked.
Now, one of the most important results from this event is, and this is also taken from the Hoopla website, “…ONG Hoopla has generated more than $450,000 for local youth-oriented activity groups and other charities.”
It’s a little late to get signed up but mark it on your calendar to attend as a spectator. I guarantee it will be worth it.
